The way of religion is here presented as a straight, plain, and easy path. It is the way of righteousness. God’s commands, which are the rule for our lives, are all holy, just, and good. Religion is not against sound reason or fairness. It is a path God has made for us (Isaiah 35:8), a highway, the king’s highway, the way of the King of kings, and the old path marked out by the footsteps of the saints.
It is also a safe, pleasant, and comforting way. There is life at the end of it, but there is also life in the journey itself, with real comfort and satisfaction. That life includes God’s favor, which is better than life, and the Spirit, who gives life. There is more than life here, there is no death in the sense of the sorrow that pulls joy down and leads toward ruin. The life found in the way of righteousness has no end. In this present world, life is mixed with death, but in the way of righteousness there is life and no death, life and immortality.
