The way of wisdom and holiness is recommended here as very safe and very satisfying. It is the way of life, the way that leads to eternal life. In it, we find the joy and contentment that give life to the soul, and at the end of it, we find complete blessedness. “Be wise and live.” It is also the way to escape the misery we can clearly see is threatening us.
This path turns us away from hell below, from the traps of hell, from Satan’s temptations, and from all his tricks. It also turns us away from the pains of hell, that everlasting destruction our sins have deserved. So wisdom is not only the way to life, but also the way of escape from ruin.
This way is also very high and honorable. It is above. A good person sets his heart on things above and lives for them. His life is directed toward heaven, and that is where his treasure is, safe from enemies and beyond the changes of this world. A good person is truly noble and great, because his desires and plans are high, and he lives above the common level of other men.
This way is also beyond the understanding and sight of foolish people. They cannot see its value or grasp its glory.
