Note, first, that a good heart becomes very useful through the tongue. A person who has knowledge should not keep it for private enjoyment alone, but use it well for the good of others. The tongue must put that knowledge to work in godly, helpful speech, by giving the right instruction, advice, and comfort at the right time, with as much humility and love as possible. Then knowledge is being used rightly, and to the one who has and uses what he has, more will be given.
Second, a wicked heart becomes very harmful through the tongue. The mouth of fools pours out foolishness, and that is offensive. Corrupt speech that comes from an evil heart, such as dirty talk, foolish talk, and crude joking, harms the good behavior of some people and can lead them into sin. It also hurts good people and troubles their minds.
