A wise person does not try to advertise his own wisdom, and that is part of his honor. He shares what he knows when it will help others grow, but he keeps it quiet when showing it off would only win praise for himself. People who truly know much, if they are prudent, carefully avoid anything that smells like self-display. They do not use every chance to show their learning, but only to do good, and then they let their works speak for them.
The thought is that skill is most complete when it is hidden. By contrast, a foolish person cannot keep his folly from showing, and that is his shame. His foolish words and actions make his foolishness plain. Either he does not care to hide it, because he has so little sense of what is honorable, or he does not know how to hide it, because he has so little self-control and wisdom in how he carries himself (Ecclesiastes 10:3).
