Note, first, a man who is blessed with a good wife is as happy as if he were on a throne, because she is a crown to him. A virtuous woman is one who is godly and wise, clever and hardworking, active for the good of her family, and careful about the life of her household. She takes her duties seriously in every part of life. She is also strong in spirit, so she can bear hardship without losing control. Such a woman honors her husband as her head, and so she is a crown to him. She is not only a credit and honor to him, as a crown is a decoration, but she also supports his authority in the home, as a crown shows power. By being submissive and faithful to him, she also sets an example for his children and servants.

Second, a man who is troubled with a bad wife is as miserable as if he were on a dung heap, because she is like rottenness in his bones, an illness that cannot be healed, and she also brings him shame. A woman who is foolish and lazy, wasteful and unfaithful, quick-tempered and harsh with her words, ruins both her husband's good name and his peace of mind. If he goes out, he hangs his head, because his wife’s faults become a shame to him. If he stays by himself, his heart sinks. He is always uneasy, because this kind of grief wears down the spirit.
