The great truths of God are very useful in pressing home the rules of right living, and none more than this: God is always watching the children of men.
He has an eye that sees everything. Nothing can be hidden from him, and nothing is overlooked or seen only partly. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place,” because he not only sees all things from heaven (Psalm 33:13), but is present everywhere. Angels are said to be full of eyes (Revelation 4:8), but God is all eye. This means not only that he knows everything, but also that his rule and care reach over all things. Secret sins, secret acts of service, and secret sorrows are all under his gaze.
He also has an eye that tells people apart, and distinguishes between actions. He watches the evil and the good. He is displeased with evil and approves of what is good, and he will judge people according to what he sees with his own eyes (Psalm 1:6; Psalm 11:4). The wicked will not escape punishment, and the righteous will not lose their reward, because God sees both and knows their true character. This gives comfort to believers and warning to sinners.
