A good tongue brings healing. It helps wounded consciences by giving comfort, and it helps sin-sick souls by pointing them to their need. It also restores peace and love when people are divided, by smoothing over differences, making fair compromises, and bringing opposed parties back together. This is the healing power of the tongue, like the tree of life, whose leaves have healing power (Revelation 22:2). A person who knows how to speak well can make the place he lives feel almost like a paradise.
An evil tongue brings hurt. When speech is twisted by stubbornness, anger, lies, or foul talk, it tears at the spirit. It wounds the speaker’s own conscience, and it brings either guilt or pain to those who hear it. Both are real injuries to the spirit. Hard words may not break bones, but many hearts have been broken by them.
