Here we see that righteousness does not only end in life because God judges it so, and wickedness ends in death because God condemns it. Righteousness, by its very nature, moves a person toward life, and wickedness moves a person toward death.
True holiness is true happiness. It prepares a person for life, and it gives a promise and a foretaste of it. Righteousness shapes the soul, disposes it, and leads it toward life.
In the same way, people who keep giving themselves over to sin are preparing themselves for ruin. The more fiercely a person follows sinful desires, the more eagerly he is moving toward his own destruction. He stirs up judgment when it seems to be resting, and he speeds it up when it seems delayed.
