Note, first, the day of death will be a day of wrath. Death is a messenger of God’s anger. When Moses thought deeply about human mortality, he was led to admire the power of God’s anger (Psalm 90:11). Death is a debt we owe, not to nature, but to God’s justice. After death comes judgment, and that is indeed a day of wrath (Revelation 6:17).
Second, riches will help a person nothing on that day. They cannot stop death’s blow, ease its pain, or take away its sting. What will this world’s wealth and property matter then? In times of public judgment, riches often expose people instead of protecting them (Ezekiel 7:19).
Third, only righteousness will deliver a person from the evil of death. A good conscience makes death easier and removes much of its fear. It is the privilege of the righteous alone that the second death, eternal death, cannot hurt them, and so the first death cannot hurt them much either.
