These two verses are, in effect, the same, and they teach the same truth as Proverbs 11:3. These truths are so sure and so important that they can be repeated often without waste. We should shape our lives by them.
The ways of true religion are clear and safe, and in them we can enjoy holy security. A living principle of honesty and grace gives us the best guide in the right path. In every uncertain case, it can lead us to say, “This is the way, walk in it.” A person who acts with such a guide does not have to stumble in the dark, because the path is set before him.
That same grace also gives us the best protection from every wrong path. The righteousness of the upright is like strong armor to them. It delivers them from the temptations of the devil and the world, and from their threats as well.
The ways of wickedness are dangerous and destructive. The wicked fall into misery and ruin through their own evil. They are caught in their own wrongdoing like a trap. “O Israel, you have destroyed yourself” (Hosea 13:9). Their sin becomes their punishment. The very thing they used to protect themselves will turn against them.
