This verse shows both the cause and the effect of a heavy spirit. When the heart is weighed down with care, fear, and sorrow, it loses strength. Such trouble sinks the spirit, so a person feels too weak to do what is needed or to bear what must be endured. In that condition, a person can hardly do the duties or enjoy the comfort of any relationship, situation, or conversation. Those who are prone to this should watch and pray against it.
The remedy is a good word from God, taken in faith, which brings joy back to the heart. One rabbinic saying points to this thought: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.” In a special way, the gospel is meant to cheer hearts that are weary and burdened (Matthew 11:28). Ministers should help believers find that joy.
