auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

Here, harmless cheerfulness is recommended to us. It helps the body stay healthy, keeps people lively, and makes them ready for their work. It also makes conversation more pleasant, because a cheerful face is attractive and helps us be good to one another. A cheerful spirit, when wisdom and grace guide it, adds beauty to religion and makes people more able to do good.

We are also warned against harmful sadness. Deep sorrow can become a strong enemy in both worship and everyday life. When sorrow takes over and acts like a tyrant, which it easily will if we let it grow, it breaks the spirit and leaves a person unfit for God’s service. The sorrow of the world leads to death. So we should grieve as though we did not grieve fully, for our own good as well as in line with God and his providence.
