Note, first, God can turn enemies into friends whenever he chooses. He holds every heart in his hand, so he can reach into people’s spirits and move them as he wills. He can work quietly, yet with power, until a man’s enemies are at peace with him. He can change their minds, or even make them submit outwardly, though their hearts may not be truly changed. He can also destroy enemies altogether, or bring together people who were once far apart.
Second, he will do this for us when it pleases him. If we make it our concern to be reconciled to God and to keep ourselves in his love, he can incline those who were jealous of us and troublesome to us to think well of us and become our friends. God made Esau at peace with Jacob, Abimelech with Isaac, and David’s enemies eager for his favor and for peace with Israel. The image of God seen in the righteous, along with his special lovingkindness toward them, is enough to win respect even from people who were once strongly prejudiced against them.
