We are all too likely to judge ourselves too kindly. A man thinks all his ways, plans, and actions are clean in his own eyes. He sees nothing wrong in them, nothing that should make him blame himself, and so he expects his plans to succeed and his words to match his hopes. But in truth, there is much uncleanness attached to our ways, and we often do not notice it, or we do not see it as seriously as we should.
God’s judgment of us, however, is always true. He weighs the spirit with perfect fairness and knows exactly what is in us. Then he gives his judgment based on what he finds. This is like the warning word Tekel, “weighed in the balance and found wanting” (Daniel 5:27), written on what had seemed acceptable to us. It is his judgment that will decide whether we stand or fall. He does not only look at a person’s outward actions, but also tests the spirit within, and we are truly what our spirits are.
