The pleasant words praised here must be the kind that a wise heart teaches and that add learning (Proverbs 16:23). They are words of timely advice, instruction, and comfort, words taken from God’s word. That is what Solomon learned from his father to count sweeter than honey and the honeycomb (Psalm 19:10).
To those who know how to enjoy them, these words are pleasant. They are like honeycomb, sweet to the soul, because they let a person taste that the Lord is gracious. Nothing is more pleasing to the new self, the life renewed by God, than God’s word and words drawn from it (Psalm 119:103).
These words are also health-giving. Many things are pleasant but bring no real good, but these pleasant words are health to the bones, meaning to the inner person, as well as sweet to the soul. They make the bones, which sin has broken and thrown out of place, rejoice. Since the bones are the body’s strength, God’s good word is a means of spiritual strength and a cure for the sicknesses that weaken us.
