There is always good to be gained from a wise and good person. His understanding is like a spring of life to him, always flowing and never running dry. He has something useful to say in every situation, and he can draw out both old and new things from his store of wisdom. At the very least, his understanding brings him deep satisfaction, because his own thoughts feed and strengthen him, even if they do not help others.
There is nothing good to gain from a fool. Even his instructions, his careful speeches, are still foolish, because they are like him and lead others toward the same emptiness. When he tries his best, it is still only foolishness. Even the ordinary talk of a wise person is better than a fool’s most serious teaching, even if the fool sits in Moses’s seat, meaning in a place of authority for teaching.
