This verse shows the character of a good king. Solomon was not praising himself here, but teaching his successors, his neighbors, and the governors under him. A good king does more than act fairly. He hates the very idea of doing wrong or bending justice for his own gain.
He also refuses to do evil himself, even when he has the power to do it easily and safely. He does not only hate wickedness in others, he hates it in his own conduct as well. This is the mark of a ruler who truly fears God and respects what is right.
The verse also shows the comfort of a good king. “His throne is established by righteousness” means that a ruler’s power stands firm when he uses it justly. If he is careful to rule well, people will trust him, follow him, and stay loyal to his government.
More than that, righteousness brings God’s blessing. That blessing is the surest support for a throne and the strongest protection around it. A kingdom built on justice has the best defense of all.
