This verse points out the duty of rulers and judges. They must judge fairly between one person and another, and decide every case by truth and justice. They must take special care of poor people, not support them in an unjust cause just because they are poor (Exodus 23:3). But if poor people have a right case, their poverty must not be used against them. The rich can usually look after themselves, but the prince, or ruler, must defend the poor and needy and speak up for them (Psalm 82:3; Proverbs 31:9).
The verse also speaks of the blessing that comes to rulers who do this well. Their throne of honor, their seat of judgment, will be established forever. That means God will favor them, and their people will also trust and support them. Both of these help to strengthen their rule and can pass it on to their descendants, keeping their family line in power.
