Here we see, first, how certain the destruction of sinners is. God’s wrath follows them, along with all the fears that belong to it. Evil stays close behind them wherever they go, like the avenger of blood who chased the person who had killed someone by accident. They have no city of refuge to run to, so every escape fails. When God pursues someone, he is sure to catch them. They may do well for a time and feel very safe, but their punishment does not sleep, even if they do.
We also see how sure the happiness of God’s people is. The God who cannot lie has promised that good will be given back to the righteous. They will be richly rewarded for all the good they have done and for all the wrong they have suffered in this world. So even if many have lost out because they chose what is right, they will not really lose by it. The reward may not come quickly, but it will come at the proper time, in the world where God gives his final repayment, and it will be more than enough.
