A guard over the lips is a guard over the soul. The person who speaks carefully, who thinks twice before speaking once, and who puts a hand over the mouth when an evil thought rises, protects himself from much guilt and sorrow. He also avoids many painful regrets about himself and the complaints others would make against him.
Many people have been ruined by an uncontrolled tongue. The one who opens his lips wide and says whatever comes to mind, who loves to shout, boast, and make a scene, and who claims a kind of speech freedom that defies both God and people, will face destruction. It will ruin his reputation, his influence, his comfort, and, in the end, his soul forever (James 3:6).
