Here we are told where a good name comes from. Reputation matters to most people, and many care deeply about it. The best reputation belongs to virtue, serious devotion to God, and wise conduct in life. A person will be praised by all who are wise and good, in agreement with God’s own judgment, which is always true. Such praise does not rest on riches, power, clever tricks, or social rank, but on wisdom, honest motives, and careful choices in reaching a good end.
The worst shame belongs to wickedness and resistance to what is good. A person with a crooked heart, one who keeps turning aside into wrong paths and keeps walking in them, will be despised. God’s providence will bring such a person to poverty and contempt. Everyone who has a true sense of honor will look down on him as someone unworthy of trust, a disgrace to others, and a stain on human life.
