Here we are warned against sloth and deceit, because the word here can mean both. The lazy, deceitful man has roast meat, but he did not hunt it himself. He lives on what others worked for, like drones in a hive. Or, if such a man did get something by hunting, which is rare for people who waste their time in sport instead of work, he still does not enjoy it when he has it. He has no real comfort in it, and God may, in his providence, cut him short of it.
At the same time, this verse should make us value hard work and honesty. The substance a diligent man has may not be large, but it is precious. It comes with God’s blessing, and he has comfort in it. It helps both him and his family.
It is his own daily bread, not bread taken from other people’s mouths. Because of that, he can see that God gives it to him in answer to prayer.
