See here what keeps a fool from becoming wise. His way is right in his own eyes. He thinks everything he does is correct, so he never asks for advice. He does not even realize he needs help. He is sure he knows the path and cannot miss it, so he never stops to ask where it leads. He lives by what seems right to him, by what his own heart wants. He makes his own will his law. A fool is ruled by what pleases him, not by conscience.
See also what keeps a wise man from becoming a fool. He is willing to be advised. He wants counsel and listens to it, because he does not trust his own judgment too much and values the guidance of those who are wise and good. A man is wise, and a sign that he will stay wise, when his ear is always open to good advice.
