Here we see, first, the good behavior of a wise and good person. He manages himself well. The wisdom praised here is not the kind that stays in the mind as learning only, but the kind that is practical and helps guide our plans and actions. Christian prudence means understanding our own path rightly, because we are travelers. Our concern is not to chase unusual sights, but to keep moving toward our true destination.
To understand our own way means that we do not spend our time acting as critics or busybodies in other people’s affairs. Instead, we pay close attention to ourselves and think carefully about the path we are taking. We should understand the directions of our way so we can follow them, the dangers so we can avoid them, the difficulties so we can push through them, and the good opportunities so we can make the most of them. In short, we must know the rules we are to live by and the goals we are to live toward, and then walk accordingly.
Second, we see the bad behavior of a foolish person. He deceives himself. He does not truly understand his own way. He thinks he does, and so he misses the road and keeps going in his error. The folly of fools is deceit, because it tricks them into their own ruin. The foolishness of the man who built on the sand was the same kind of deceit.
