Here we see grace and sin in their true colors.
Grace ruling in a person is shown by reverence for God. It gives honor to the One who is infinitely great and high, and to whom all honor belongs. What could be more fitting, or more pleasing, than this for a rational creature? Sin ruling in a person is nothing less than contempt for God. Sin shows itself to be truly evil most clearly in this, that it despises the God whom angels worship.
Those who despise God’s commands and refuse to be guided by them, or who reject his promises and will not receive them, are despising God himself and all his character. A man with grace, and with the fear of God ruling in him, walks in honesty. He takes his actions seriously, is faithful to both God and people, and every step he takes is measured by God’s rule. Such a man honors God.
But the person who is crooked in his ways, who willfully follows his own desires and passions, who is unfair and dishonest, and whose life does not match his profession of faith, is a wicked man. Even if he claims devotion, he will be counted as one who despises God himself.
