We are told here, and we may rely on it, that a person’s integrity will keep him safe. Whoever walks uprightly before God and people, who is faithful to both, who means what he says and does as he should, walks securely. He is under God’s protection and rests in a holy safety. He goes on with humble confidence, armed against Satan’s temptations, the troubles of the world, and the insults of people.
He knows the ground he stands on, the guide he follows, the protection around him, and the glory he is headed toward. So he moves forward with confidence and great peace (Isaiah 32:17; Isaiah 33:15-16). Some understand this as part of the very character of an upright person, that he walks safely, unlike someone who rushes ahead without care. He does not dare do anything unless his own conscience is clear about its lawfulness, but makes sure he sees his way plainly in everything.
On the other hand, a person’s dishonesty will bring shame. Whoever twists his way and turns into crooked paths, pretending one thing before God and people while meaning another, may hide for a time and even seem to succeed. But sooner or later, he will be found out. At the least, God will expose him on the great day. Whoever twists his ways will be made an example, some say, as a warning to others.
