Here is, first, the deserved praise of those who make good use of their opportunities. They take the trouble to gather and increase what they have, for both soul and body. They provide for the future while there is still time to provide, and they gather in summer, the time for gathering. Such a person is a wise son, and that is his honor. He acts wisely for his parents, whom he should support if there is need, and he brings credit to himself, his family, and the education he received.
Here is, second, the just blame of those who waste their opportunities. He who sleeps, loves ease, wastes his time, and neglects his work, especially he who sleeps in harvest when he should be storing up for winter, and lets slip the season for getting what he will later need, is a son who causes shame. He is a foolish son. He brings shame on himself when winter comes, and he brings shame on all his friends. He who gains knowledge and wisdom in his youth gathers in summer, and he will enjoy the comfort and honor of his industry. But he who wastes the days of his youth will carry the shame of his laziness when he is old.
