In the work of justice, much depends on witnesses. For the good of everyone, witnesses must be honest and principled. A conscientious witness will not dare to give testimony that is even slightly false. He will not twist the facts because of friendship or hostility, and he will tell what he knows, whether people are pleased or upset. Then judgment flows on fairly and freely, like a river.
But a witness who can be bought, pressured, or intimidated will tell lies without hesitation. He will do it with the same ease and confidence as if everything he says were true.
