auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

As in death, so sometimes in life, the righteous are greatly favored and the wicked are brought low. Good people are helped out of trouble that seemed hopeless, and their feet are set in a wide place (Psalm 66:12; Psalm 34:19). God can still deliver his people when they have given up hope and their enemies seem to have won, as if the wilderness had trapped them.

At the same time, the wicked can fall into the very troubles they thought were far away from them. Sometimes they even fall into the trouble they helped bring on the righteous, as if they were given in exchange for them. Mordecai was saved from the gallows, Daniel from the lions' den, and Peter from prison, while those who opposed them came to ruin instead. Israel was delivered through the Red Sea, while the Egyptians were drowned in it. The saints are so precious in God's sight that he gives people in exchange for them (Isaiah 43:3-4).
