This verse shows, first, the sad end of a wicked person when he leaves this world. He is “driven away in his wickedness,” that is, he dies still joined to his sin. He has clung so tightly to the world that he does not want to leave it, but he is forced out. His soul is taken from him, and his sin goes with him into the next world. He dies in his sins, still under their guilt and power, not made right with God and not made holy.
His wickedness itself is like the storm that carries him off. He is swept away like chaff before the wind, driven out of the world in judgment.
The verse also shows the comforting end of a godly person. “He has hope in his death” means that when he comes to die, he still has a sure expectation of life and blessing beyond death. Even if he feels pain and some fear of dying, he still has hope. He looks toward the good thing promised, the blessed hope that God, who cannot lie, has promised.
