Those who work eagerly to do good in the world win love from both God and people. The phrase “rises early to that which is good” means someone who is quick and eager to look for chances to help friends and support the poor, and who puts real effort into it. Such a person gains favor. People around him love him, speak well of him, and are ready to return kindness. Even better than that, he has God’s loving favor, which is better than life itself.
Those who put effort into doing harm are setting themselves up for ruin. In time, what they planned for others will come back on them. The verse places seeking harm opposite to seeking good, because anyone who is not doing good is, in effect, doing harm.
