This is the same thought as in Proverbs 21:9. There are two lessons here. First, we should pity those who are poorly matched, especially when one person is quarrelsome and always stirring up trouble, whether husband or wife. The same warning fits both. It is better to be alone than tied to someone who should have been a helpful partner, but instead makes life hard.
Second, some people who live alone may sometimes be envied. They lack the comfort of company, but they are also spared the trouble that company can bring. There are times when people can say, “Blessed is the womb that never bore,” and there are times when they can say, “Blessed is the man who was never married, but lives like a servant in a corner of the roof.”
