Proverbs 25:6 - Meaning and Application

We see here that true religion does not destroy good manners. Instead, it teaches us to act with humility and respect toward those above us. We should keep our place and give way to those who have a right to it. Do not push yourself forward carelessly in a king’s presence, or among great people. Some understand this to mean, do not put yourself on their level. Do not try to match them in dress, furniture, gardens, household display, or the size of your staff, because that insults them and can waste your own money.

Religion also teaches self-denial, which is an even better lesson than good manners. It tells us to give up the place we think we deserve, and not to crave outward display or promotion. Do not force your way into the company of those above you. Be content with a lower place if God has assigned it to you.

The reason is that this is the path to true advancement, as our Savior shows in a parable that seems to come from this verse (Luke 14:9). This does not mean we should pretend to be humble as a trick to win honor. It means we should truly be humble, because God honors such people, and others often do as well.

It is better for a person to be raised higher than he expected, than to be put down lower than he claimed, especially in the presence of a prince. To be admitted to a ruler’s presence was a great honor, and to stare at him without permission was a serious act of pride.
