Proverbs 25:8 - Meaning and Application

Here is good advice about going to court. Do not rush into a lawsuit before you have thought it through and talked it over with your friends. Do not move quickly into a quarrel, or send for legal action in anger, just because your case seems strong at first. Take time to weigh it carefully, because we are often partial when our own interests are at stake. Think about the certain costs and the uncertain outcome. It may bring you much worry and trouble, and in the end the case may still go against you.

Also, do not take your neighbor to court before you have first tried to settle the matter peacefully (Proverbs 25:9). Talk over your case with your neighbor in private, and you may find that you understand each other better. Then you may see that there is no need for a lawsuit. In public disputes, wars that should have been avoided are often only ended after great loss. The same is true in personal conflicts. Do not treat your neighbor like an enemy or a stranger until you have first told him his fault in private, and he has refused to make peace. Some matters are private and should not be exposed to others, much less dragged into public court. Do not reveal another person’s secret. Do not seek revenge by embarrassing your opponent with things that should have stayed private and that do not belong in the case.

There are two reasons to be careful before going to law. First, your case may go against you. Then you will not know what to do when the other side proves that your charge was unfounded and that your complaint was empty and annoying. You may be shamed, lose the case, and have to pay the costs, all of which might have been avoided by a little thought.

Second, it can damage your reputation badly if you become known as a quarrelsome person. The person you sue, and everyone who hears the case, may shame you. They may see you as a person without principle, and that bad name may never fully go away.
