This verse shows that a ruler’s strongest support comes from working hard to stop evil and improve the people’s ways. A prince who does this well strengthens his own rule.
The duty of magistrates is to remove wickedness. They are to use their power to frighten evil-doers and hold them back, not just to keep openly bad people out of court, but to stop them from spreading their corruption among the people. This is like taking the dross out of silver by fire. Wicked people are the waste of a nation, the scum of the land, and should be removed. If people will not remove them, God will (Psalm 119:119). If the wicked are taken away from a king’s presence, and he shows that he hates their evil ways, that will do much to stop them from doing harm. When the court is reformed, the whole kingdom is more likely to be reformed too (Psalm 101:3, Psalm 101:8).
There is also a clear benefit for the people. They become like silver that has been refined, ready for honorable use. There is benefit for the ruler as well. His throne will be made firm through this righteousness, because God will bless such rule, the people will be more willing to obey it, and the kingdom will last longer.
