Here, as before, Solomon grieves for the man who has a cranky, hot-tempered wife, one who is always arguing and making life miserable for everyone around her. It is a trouble that cannot be escaped, like a constant drip on a rainy day. A neighbor’s quarrels may be like a hard shower, unpleasant while it lasts, but you can still find shelter. A wife’s quarrels, however, are like steady rain that soaks through everything, and the only real answer is patience (Proverbs 19:13).
It is also a trouble that cannot be hidden. A wise man would cover it if he could, for the honor of both himself and his wife, but he cannot. It is as hard to hide as the sound of the wind when it blows, or the smell of a strong perfume. People who are stubborn and noisy in their anger end up exposing their own shame, even when their friends try, out of kindness, to keep it hidden.
