auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

Here, it is assumed that an honest, good person may have only a little of this world’s wealth, since not all the righteous are rich. A person may have very little and still remain honest. Poverty does tempt people to dishonesty (Proverbs 30:9), but it is not a force that cannot be resisted.

It is also true that someone may grow rich for a time by fraud and oppression. Such a person may have large income and possessions gained and kept without any right to them, and may make no good use of them.

The point is that a small estate, if honestly gained and if a person is content with it, enjoys it well, serves God gladly with it, and uses it rightly, is far better than a large estate that was badly gained, badly kept, or badly spent. It brings more inward peace and a better reputation among wise and good people. It will last longer, and it will count for more on the great day, when people will be judged not by what they had, but by what they did.
