Note, divine providence orders and directs things that seem completely random to us. Nothing happens by chance, and no event is settled by blind luck. Everything comes about by the will and wise purpose of God. What people have no eye or hand in, God is deeply involved in.
When people make a solemn appeal to God by casting lots, to settle a serious matter that cannot be decided in any other way, or not as well another way, they must look to God in it. They should do this by prayer, asking him to guide the result rightly, as in, “Give a perfect lot” (1 Samuel 14:41; Acts 1:24). They should also accept the result when it is settled, being satisfied that God’s hand is in it, and that his hand is guided by perfect wisdom. We should think of all God’s providential dealings in our affairs as the directing of our lot, the settling of what we have committed to him. We must make peace with his decisions in that way.
