A further mark of good kings is that they love and take pleasure in those who speak rightly. They hate flatterers and people who only try to please them. They want everyone around them to deal honestly with them and tell the truth, whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, about people and about matters of state. In this way, everything is seen clearly and nothing is hidden or distorted (Proverbs 29:12).
Good kings also do more than practice righteousness themselves. They make sure to appoint people under them who will also act justly, which matters greatly to the people. The people must obey not only the king as their highest ruler, but also the governors sent by him (1 Peter 2:14). So a good king will choose men of conscience for positions of power, men who can speak what is right and wise, and who know how to say the proper thing at the proper time.
