auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

Note, first, the administration of public justice by the magistrate is an ordinance of God. In that work, the scales are held, and they should be held with a steady and fair hand. We ought to submit to it for the Lord’s sake, and to recognize God’s authority in the magistrate’s authority (Romans 13:1; 1 Peter 2:13).

Second, justice in trade between one person and another is also part of God’s design. He gave people the skill to make scales and weights so that buyer and seller may deal honestly and neither be cheated. All other useful inventions that help preserve fairness come from him. He has also commanded in his law that these measures be honest. It is therefore a great insult to him and to his rule to cheat by pretending to do right, which is wickedness in a place of judgment.
