A good man shows himself wise by the way he controls his tongue. James says that if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a mature, complete person (James 3:2). Part of a righteous person’s character is that he knows he must answer for his words, and for the good or bad effect they have on others. So he makes it his duty to speak truthfully. His heart answers, meaning he says what he really thinks and would not dare to speak differently. He speaks the truth in his heart (Psalm 15:2). He also tries to speak in a fitting and useful way, so he studies how to answer and wants his words to be gracious (Nehemiah 2:4; Nehemiah 5:7).
A wicked man, by contrast, shows himself a fool because he does not care what comes out of his mouth. His speech pours out evil things. That brings dishonor on God and religion, shame on himself, and harm to others. Surely a heart is evil when it overflows with evil speech.
