See here how hard a good person works to pass on goodness and do good with it. His mouth, as the outlet of his mind, is a well of life. It is a steady spring of good speech, meant to build others up, like streams that water the ground and make it fruitful. It also comforts others, like water refreshing a tired traveler. It is a well of life because it is pure and clean. It is not only free from poison, but also from any dirty or corrupt talk.

See also how hard a wicked person works to hide his badness and use it to do harm. The mouth of the wicked covers violence. He hides planned evil with words of friendship, so he can carry it out more safely and successfully. Joab, David’s military commander, kissed and killed; Judas Iscariot kissed and betrayed Jesus. This is his sin, and the punishment fits it (Pro 10:6): violence covers the mouth of the wicked. What he gained by violence will be taken from him by violence (Job 5:4, Job 5:5).
