Those who are greedy bring trouble on their own households. A person who is eager for gain and makes himself a slave to money rises early, stays up late, and lives on anxious labor in the chase for it. He rushes about, strains himself and everyone around him in business, frets over every loss and disappointment, and argues with anyone who seems to stand in the way of his profit. In this way, he troubles his own house and becomes a burden and annoyance to his children and servants.
If greed leads a person to take bribes or use dishonest ways to make money, he leaves a curse behind for those who come after him. What he gains that way will sooner or later bring trouble into the house (Habakkuk 2:9, Habakkuk 2:10). But those who are generous and righteous bring a blessing to their families. The one who hates gifts, that is, who refuses bribes meant to twist justice, and who rejects every sinful and shady way of getting money, will live. He will have the comfort of life, and he will live in prosperity and honor. His name and family will live on and continue.
