People who are proud and quarrelsome wear themselves out and live in constant unrest. They are set against those who will be “made fat,” meaning those who will be blessed and strengthened. A proud person thinks too highly of himself and looks down on others. He cannot stand rivals or disagreement, so he stirs up trouble, creates conflict, and brings disorder to himself and everyone around him.
By contrast, those who trust in the Lord live in peace and are made “fat,” that is, well-provided for and satisfied. Instead of fighting for themselves, they hand their cause over to God. They also avoid the waste that pride and quarrelsomeness bring, so they keep what others spend in vain. They enjoy God, find deep satisfaction in him, and their soul rests at ease. In the end, those who live by faith are the ones who live most peacefully and pleasantly.
