Note, first, that God delights to bring down those who are raised up in pride, and he often does so in the course of his providence. The proud magnify themselves, defy the God above them, and trample on everyone around them. Such people are those God resists, and he will destroy not only them, but also their houses, the things they are proud of and expect will last forever. Pride has brought ruin to many people.
Note, second, that God delights to support those who are brought low, and he often does this in a clear way. He will secure the boundary of the poor widow, which proud and harmful men break into, and which the widow cannot defend for herself. It is to God’s honor to protect the weak and stand up for those who are oppressed.
