People who fly into anger too quickly are rightly laughed at. Those who are irritable, touchy, and easily offended act foolishly. They say and do things that are ridiculous, and they bring contempt on themselves. When their temper cools, they cannot help feeling ashamed of it. That should move especially those who are known for wisdom and honor to keep a tight grip on their anger.
More dangerous are malicious people, and they are rightly feared and hated. A man of wicked plans hides his resentment until he has a chance to get revenge. He keeps secretly plotting how to hurt his neighbor and do him harm, as Cain did when he killed Abel (Genesis 4:8). Such a person is hated by all people. An angry man is pitiable, because a sudden temptation throws him off and disgraces him, but his outburst soon passes, and he may be sorry for it. A spiteful, revengeful man is far more hateful. There is no safe way to guard against him, and no easy cure for him.
