It is a sign of weakness to be too open. A fool is the person who says everything on his mind, tells all he knows, and blurts out whatever he is thinking. He cannot keep a secret. Whatever comes up in conversation, he fires off his whole opinion at once. When anger rises, he says whatever comes into his head, even if it harms others. When he talks about any matter, he says all he thinks, yet still never thinks he has said enough, whether it is useful or not.
It is wiser to be guarded. A wise person does not say everything at once, but waits for a second thought. He holds back a present thought until a better time, when it will fit better and likely do more good. He does not keep talking without pause, but leaves room to listen to objections and answer them. Sometimes, as the old saying goes, silence is as much a part of good speaking as speech itself.
