A good man shows mercy to a wide range of living things. He has compassion not only for human beings in their lowest condition, but even for the life of his beast. He cares for animals not only because they serve him, but because they are God’s creatures. He also acts in line with God’s own care, since God preserves both man and beast.
So the animals under our care must be fed, given proper rest, and never abused or treated harshly. Balaam was rebuked for beating his donkey. The law even made provision for oxen. Those who are cruel or unfair to animals show that they are unrighteous. Fury and brutality toward creatures reveal and strengthen a cruel spirit, and they help make creation groan (Romans 8:22).
A wicked man, on the other hand, can be deeply unmerciful. Even his supposed kindness is cruel. The natural compassion that belongs to him as a human being is damaged and twisted by sin into hard-heartedness. What he calls compassion is often only cruelty in disguise, like Pilate’s proposal about Christ, the innocent one: “I will punish him and release him.” Their claimed kindness is often only a cover for planned cruelty.
