This shows how great a blessing good people are to the places where they live, especially those who are truly wise. That is why they should be valued so highly.
The righteous are like trees of life. The fruit of their godliness and love for others, their teaching, correction, example, and prayers, as well as their standing with God and their influence in the world, are like the fruit of that tree. They are precious and helpful, and they help support and nourish spiritual life in many people. They are ornaments of God’s paradise, his church on earth, and the church stands for their sake.
The wise are something even more. They are like trees of knowledge, but not forbidden knowledge, rather knowledge that should be welcomed and used well. A wise person, by sharing wisdom, wins souls. That means he leads people to love God and holiness, and so brings them into the interests of God’s kingdom among people. The wise are said to turn many to righteousness, and that is the same idea as winning souls here (Daniel 12:3). Abraham’s converts are called the souls he had gotten (Genesis 12:5). Those who want to win souls need wisdom to know how to deal with people, and those who do win souls show that they are wise.
