Our riches will fail us when we need them most. Anyone who trusts in wealth as if it could win God’s favor, protect him, and be his share in life will fall. He is like a man who puts his weight on a broken reed. It does not hold him up, and it can also slip into his hand and pierce him.
Our righteousness will still help us when wealth has failed. The righteous will then flourish like a branch, a branch of righteousness, like a tree whose leaf does not wither (Psalm 1:3). Even in death, when riches fail people, the bones of the righteous will flourish like fresh grass (Isaiah 66:14). Those who put down roots in the world will dry up, but those grafted into Christ and sharing in his root and richness will stay fruitful and flourishing.
